Liebes Tagbuch

So we arrived in Berlin early the day before yesterday morning. 2 hours of sleep had left us tired and pining for our beds. We found our way to the hotel without much difficulty and after a room change (as seems to be the norm with most hotels) we ended up with a beautiful twin suite. We lounged, marvelled at how early it was, and searched for the local supermarket in our early hours and once we had our bearings we went on an excursion to Potsdamer Platz to find sustainance and beverages of the alcoholic variety. We strolled around and I showed Pippa the sights, planning all the places we wanted to go. Ending up at an Australian bar we had some incredible burgers and a glass of wine, but it wasn't long until the lack of sleep overtook us and we began our journey back.

Reviews of our hotel made comments about how 'uncentral' it is. I couldn't disagree more. We have navigated easily to and from the hotel, seen some lovely sights from just travelling on the S-bahn and looking out, and the over all loved every part of our journeys. Nothing took that long to get to. The Zoo is only 4 stops away on the U-bahn, and the station is right on our doorstep! Pippa and I could only conclude that either these people had their heads in the sand and had no understanding of public transport and the concept of time, or actually never stayed here at all in the first place! And reviews said traffic was loud - A) it's a city... So just what?! B) even with the windows open we were fine the last two nights! Buy some earplugs if you're that bloody delicate! Apologies, but the absurdness of the complaints you see from people really get to me.
Moving swiftly on nevertheless, once getting back to the hotel the first night we could barely keep our eyes open, I was stuck in the middle of a triple battle in Pokemon X and kept dozing off as it seemed never ending. By 10pm we had passed out and we slept for 12 hours...

The next day we promised to do a lot of walking and exploring and photography. We took the U-bahn to near Charlottenburg and then the S-bahn to Hackescher Markt. The journey was loads of fun as we passed some places we swore we would stop at, and had a lovely view of the city and we passed by. Even the architecture of the train stations captivated us. We wondered over to Hackescher Höfe which was even just a pretty place to walk around. Lots of unique little boutiques there. We then walked in the direction of the Berliner Dom, as we could see it over the rooftops, and found many beautiful sights along the way. Our walking excursion eventually took us to Friedrichstraße, where we wondered for a while before contemplating dinner. We were two stops from Alexanderplatz, so we thought that would be the perfect place for us to have some food and drinks. We found the Fernsehrturm and sat underneath it and enjoyed an amazing happy hour cocktail, pasta dish and a pitcher of Warsteiner beer. Slightly drunk, we wondered for a while and found ourselves going through Oktoberfest stalls, where some 15 year old boy offered me a hug which I accepted, and then attempted to kiss me which I had most certainly not accepted. Luckily Pippa was there to prise him off me and we continued on our journey. People hug people on the streets all the time in Brighton, so it never dawned on me that if you accepted a street-hug here it might mean more. Or maybe this kid was an exception. Either way we live and learn.

The only way I can really describe where we had our next beer was that it resembled a 'Beer Hall'. Men wore Lederhosen and table served you and you sat on wooden benches surrounded by about 50 other tables in a very medieval backdrop. Beer was served in massive glass mugs and I was feeling pretty drunk by the end of the experience.

The journey home took a little while as it was late by this point, but we sat up until about 3.30am which this morning we definitely regretted.

Time for a shower I think.
