The right time came when I arrived back from my trip to Geneva to see my boyfriend for the first time since he'd moved back there. I had been away for 10 days already and had had an amazing time. It was sudden yet exhilarating when Pippa and I picked up the phone to eachother on the Monday I was back and by the Wednesday we were scheduled to book. The Pippa I'm referring to, as I have never really given names before on these blogs, is both my best friend and renowned lifestyle, music and fashion blogger 'Pippa Says', who I have been collaborating in some way or another with since the day we met over 2 years ago.
I had just bought my new pole that I had been saving for all year and she came along to Hoddesdon of all places that Wednesday morning to pick it up with me. That little adventure, with me driving again finally, was the beginning of a much larger one for us. Later that day, searching late into the night for the right holiday destination and hotel budget, we found what we were looking for. A daring 7 nights in Berlin at a gorgeous hotel in the South-West area, somewhere I have never really explored before.
Leading up to the trip, given the lastminute nature of it all, we brainstormed a list of things that we would try our hardest to do during our time here. Happy hour, shopping and copious amounts of coffee was a given, but we needed to make sure a little MORE was achieved than just a girly recovery trip. Here are the ideas we had:
Pippa's picks:
1. The Großer Tiergarten
Anyone who read my New York posts last summer will be well aware of my adoration of city parks. A large part of my opinion towards cities is shaped around the qualities of their parks, and Berlin’s Tiergarten left a long-lasting impression.
2. Brandenburg Gate
You can’t go to Berlin without getting several photos outside the Brandenburg gate – Anna and I were discussing outfits for that shoot before we even booked the trip.
3. Berlin Wall
Very little needs to be said about why this is in the list – it’s simply something that everybody must see and take 5 minutes to reflect on.
4. East side gallery
What many of you may not know about me is that graffiti is one of my favourite forms of art. I spent the majority of my train journey to Berliner Straßer in awe of the graffiti that covers many of the walls that we were passing by.
5. Reichstag
In the hope that we’re not too late to book, the Reichstag is high up on my list of things I want to see this week. Not only is it a beautiful building, but for a building that has only been standing for 110 years, it’s been through a lot of chaos.
My picks:
I spent a lot of time in a studio flat in Prenzlauerberg in my teens and would like to visit the area again while we’re back. This will involve some tracking down, but it is an area I am dying to show Pippa, as it is a quirky place that is sentimental to me. The hunt will probably turn into a bit of an adventure!
7. The Sony Centre – IMAX
Not only architecturally magnificent and futuristic, it is also a great place to go for a great film experience if we feel rather hungover!
8. The ‘Musikinstrumenten – Museum’
There is an incredible collection of beautiful instruments, particularly organs, harpsichords and pianos, which as musicians Pippa and I definitely need to see on our trip.
9. Der Hauptstadt Zoo Berlin
I love animals and I get so excited when I visit zoos and aquariums. Always a good day out!
10. Berliner Fernsehturm
The TV Tower gives a spectacular view of the city. I have never been and it has been a dream of mine to go! A drink at the Panorama Bar is also a must!
We arrived here yesterday morning and already so much has happened! I leave you until my next diary entry with a picture of Pippa claiming ownership of the beautiful hotel room we half-bartered for.
Reporting soon!
