We were a little later getting up than originally intended. We slept in til 11, showered off the beer, and one hangover later we were out the door to begin our day... At 3pm. Zombified, it took a lot of fiddling, organisation and coffee to get us out of the hotel room and into the pace that is Berlin life.
We wanted to go to the Zoo. It was on our list, and we both needed a little TLC, and animals always put a smile on my face (except if they are gnawing on my flesh or pulling my arms out of their sockets). But before we indulged in the animal park, sustainance was needed, so we went to McDonalds, and decided to give in to our hangover urges. I discovered, much to our delight, that the German McDonalds did a 'Chicken Box' - a single entity that held not only 12 chicken nuggets but also 6 chicken wings too! Never had I seen such a thing in all my McDonalds life. We shared the box with some Fanta and fries and felt revitalised. My only critique of the European McDonalds experience, as I have had the joy of sampling it in various different countries, is that you pay for sauces. You don't have a bounty of ketchup at your disposal like we are used to in England. As I said, only a minor fault, but something to take away.
Grey skies were heavy when we left McDonalds, symbolic of the state of our digestive systems. We walked to the Zoo full and content, headaches subsiding slightly. It was 4pm and it started to rain. Like the Brits we are, we were equipped with umbrellas and the weather was no match to our need for creature comforts.
Well this little critter, reminiscent to me of beloved nitwit Karl Pilkington, is a comfortable creature indeed. I did so envy his dry, snuggley indoor space, up there on a branch.
The presence of this gorilla was so impressive. He just seemed to be sitting there, twiddling his thumbs. I hadn't quite seen anything like it before. He was very close to us behind the glass and I made eye contact with him which was a little scary.
We also met an armoured bear with out his armour, it seems they took it from him. But he is still powerful and I'm sure he will escape and steal it back when the time is right.
Amongst many other animals we saw lions a plenty, who all had an intense roaring competition which almost deafened us, but my favourite animals were the little fuzzy pigs (yes, I have no idea what they are actually called as I was too overcome by their cuteness to check). Their noses were long and they had their snufflers in the sand snorting and digging away. It was just so adorable.
It was time to leave sadly as the park was closing, so we decided too explore the areaarea of Zooligischer Garten and take a stroll through the shops in the rain. On our journey towards Wittenberg Platz we came across the Keiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, which stood impressively against the now evening sky. We were growing tired and needed a sit down and a refresh, and we spotted the KaDeWe and I knew I had to take Pippa inside. The KaDeWe reminds me a lot of Selfridges, but even classier. We found a little bar in the food court and sat to have a drink. This is where I experienced the best hot chocolate of my life. I had never ever had something so beautiful and so smooth and chocolatey as a hot drink before. A small pleasure, but a great one at that.
Over all, hangovers seem to slow us down so not much can be expected on days like this (especially given the weather) but we have woken up early today, eaten breakfast and will be on our way shortly to make up for yesterday's slothfullness.
Above is a zoo selfie we took before the rain hit yesterday.
We'll try harder today, Museums here we come!
